Interview: Mr. Scott Phillips Preston ansvers the questions of ouer correspondent Question: Scott, tell me, please, what was your very first impression of Ukraine? The moment when you saw it first time; what are the differences you noticed between Ukraine and other countries, which you have visited? And, by the way, which foreign countries have you already visited besides Ukraine? Answer: Jetlag. I was very tired when got out of the airplane in the airport, but the weather was comfortable – not freezing. It is somewhat similar to America. I visited Morocco some years ago – it was more dissimilar to America than Ukraine is. Despite the similarities there are still many things that are different here than in the United States: different cars, architecture. People here seem to be more happy, then in Washington – in Kiev they smile more often then there. Question: How often do you think of your school years? Answer: Not often. Sometimes since I work in the library, with children I am reminded of my school years. I would like to compare the schools and educational systems in Ukraine with the schools in the USA, like what subjects are taught. Question: Which school subjects did you like best, and which did you hate? Answer: My favorite were History, Civics. I really disliked Math! I was not so bad in it, but still I didn’t like it. Question: Which kind of entertainments are most popular with young people in US nowadays? Which of them did you prefer at the same age? Answer: Since I am much older I will utilize my Nephew as an example. My nephew likes to read, to watch TV and video, to listen music. He also likes sports – baseball, soccer. In their free time some children also volunteer for an organization, for example, Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for people, who can’t afford to do it for themselves. At the same age I did not have access to so many kinds of entertainment. I read a lot, and liked very much to hike in the forest. Question: Your hobby? Answer: - My hobbies are reading, cooking, writing, learning about people, their culture and history. Question: Which book did you like most at the age of 12-14? Which one do you consider to be the best nowadays? Answer: The 3 Musketeers, Robin Hood, the Count of Monte Cristo, Moby Dick, and Lord of the Rings and so on. Among current literature – I’d say Harry Potter, but there are many of other good ones , such as Artemis Fowl and The Silent Strength of Stones.. Question: Which high school did you attend? Is it very difficult to enter any high school in US? Answer: South Johnston. There are public and private schools in USA. It’s sometimes is really hard to get in the private school, and studying there is expensive. The education system in America includes Primary schools (ages 5-8), Elementary (ages 9-11), junior high ( for ages 11 to 13) and High school (13-18). Then you can go to the college or to university. Question: Traditional question of OM: your wishes to our readers? Answer: I wish you to have the opportunity to live out your dreams, to live and explore the world, but to remember that Kherson is your home. You’ll be the leaders of tomorrow and therefore should be active in your life in Kherson today. Interviewer:Victoria Popova |
